US SENATE

Contra-band: President, Precedents, and Plausible Deniability

A SPECIALIZED COMMITTEE

ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE

Washington is in disarray. Hostage lives are at stake, the United States’ reputation hangs in the balance… and the Reagan administration is working with Iran?

What begins as a desperate attempt to free Americans from an Iranian-backed group in Lebanon spirals into something far more dangerous—and potentially catastrophic. Senior officials have orchestrated secret arms deals with a sworn adversary, built covert funding networks, and constructed a shadow operation that bypasses every check and balance designed to prevent such gross overreaches of authority. What unfolds is not just a breach of public trust, but a direct challenge to congressional authority. This scandal has a name: the Iran-Contra Affair.

The hearings are live. The leaks are imminent. The weapons have been sent. And in Washington, plausible deniability may be the most powerful weapon of all.

THe Dais

Head CHair

Sahar Sayam

  • Sahar Sayam is a sophomore majoring in Global Studies and Peace, War, and Defense. She's been doing MUN since high school and is super excited to meet people on the college circuit! Right now, she’s probably re-watching a Dcom or listening to Taylor Swift while drinking a sugary iced coffee.

Deputy CHair

Dominic Seeley

  • Dominic Seeley is a sophomore majoring in political science and philosophy. He began doing Model United Nations as a freshman at Chapel Hill. In his free time, he plays basketball and Overwatch, but isn't very good at either.

Deputy CHair

Rowanne Griffiths

  • Rowanne Griffiths is a sophomore majoring in political science and global studies from Chapel Hill. She has been doing Model UN since her freshman year of high school. Outside of school, you will probably find her reading a book in the quad, badly playing the piano, or cooking for her friends.

Crisis CHair

Paisley Holland

  • Paisley (who no longer has pink hair) is a sophomore majoring in Global Studies and Journalism, with a minor in Russian. Her time with Model UN only really began in college, and this is her first time associate crisis directing! Outside of MUN, she writes for The Daily Tar Heel.
