Types of Committees
General Assemblies
UNCMUNC XVII features three General Assemblies: one set in the past, one in the future, and one in the present. These will range from 40 to 80 delegates, our largest committees. GAs have formed the core of the Model UN experience since our first simulation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1938. Each GA is organized around two central topics, and delegates will select one of them to debate for the duration of the conference (or both if they’re really efficient). The goal of a GA at UNCMUNC is to craft a lengthy and innovative resolution filled with solutions drafted entirely by you! Delegates competing at UNCMUNC are expected to represent their country faithfully. Effective research, writing, and speaking are essential to success in GAs at UNCMUNC XVII.
Specialized Committees
New for UNCMUNC this year, Specialized Committees (SPECs) represent a step up from the challenge of a GA, incorporating unique settings, topics, committee mechanisms, and occasional crisis updates. SPECs will range from 20 to 35 delegates. UNCMUNC XVII features two SPECs, one modeled on the United States Senate during one of the most important parts of Cold War history, and the second featuring a cutting-edge simulation of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting States+ (OPEC+). Both these committees will require detailed research and exceptional strategy in committee, and delegates should anticipate dealing with crisis updates, crafting directives (shorter versions of resolutions), and collaborating with other delegates constantly in committee and through secret Joint Personal Directives (JPDs). Each committee will feature a procedure guide so that you know exactly what to prepare for!
Traditional Crisis committees
Crisis committees at UNCMUNC are the smallest (15-25 delegates), fastest-paced, and some of the most competitive rooms at the conference. Delegates will have to constantly think on their feet, write crisis notes, craft directives, and respond to crisis updates, all within 30-45 minute cycles!! Delegates must work collaboratively, but also work in secret to advance their position as they meticulously shape their crisis arc over their weekend in Chapel Hill. We encourage delegates in Crisis Committees to research their topics and characters thoroughly and not be afraid to think outside of the box! Crises at UNCMUNC will be divided into five sections: Historical, Fantasy, Contemporary, Joint-Crisis, and Non-Traditional.
The Joint-Crisis Committee
This year, UNCMUNC XVII is proud to bring back to the circuit a three-way Joint-Crisis Committee (JCC), the Sons of Abraham, featuring a never-before-seen topic and region in Model United Nations. This committee will be just like a regular Crisis, but delegates will be interacting within all three committees that form the JCC, and making these connections is pivotal to success. The JCC will feature exciting twists and turns, and the Arch-Crisis Director reserves the right to do whatever he chooses with this year's JCC. Get ready for the MUN time of your life, no matter which room you choose. Specific procedure guidelines will be released on the appropriate committee webpages.
Non-Traditional Crisis committees
If UNCMUNC is known for one thing, it's rewriting the playbook on what Model United Nations can be. Starting with its Dynamic Crisis three years ago, in which delegates travel through time and can go through countless positions over the weekend, UNCMUNC has been crafting dynamic experiences for delegates for years. UNCMUNC XVII continues to push the boundaries, featuring a revamped Dynamic Crisis, a circuit-first 24-Hour Challenge Double-Del Crisis à la Mr. Beast, and UNCMUNC’s always popular board game crisis, this year featuring Risk! For specific procedure guidelines on these immensely complicated but immensely fun committees, keep an eye on the appropriate committee webpages. Trying new things is always fun!
Ad-Hoc Committees
Last but certainly not least, UNCMUNC features two Ad-Hoc Committees this year, one non-traditional crisis and one traditional crisis. These committees are the toughest challenge that UNCMUNC can provide, but that’s about all I’m gonna tell you about them. Have fun! Topics will be released upon your first committee session in Chapel Hill.
From your Secretary-General Marvin Lee!
