ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE
The year is 1911, and the Qing Dynasty is on its last legs, trying to preserve centuries long history of imperial rule in the face of growing revolutionary sentiment. Weakened from the Opium Wars and constant intervention from Japan and the European colonial powers, the Qing Dynasty tried its hand at reforms but found itself at a loss for support from both the Imperial Court and reformists, unable to satisfy the polarizing demands of either. Fanning the flames of discontent, constant uprisings against Qing provincial authorities have continued to provoke unrest against the Imperial Regime and have bolstered the revolutionary Tongmenghui. Now the stage is set for revolution, pitting the ideals of nationalism, republicanism, and modernization against the conservative Mandate of Heaven. Will China emerge as a unified republic? Or will the imperial order prevail? Revolutionaries and imperial loyalists alike will lie, cheat, steal, and use their get-out-of-jail-free cards to impose their designs upon a crumbling dynasty… or go bankrupt trying.

Amanda Carvalho is a junior from Nairobi, Kenya, double-majoring in Mathematics and Business Administration. This conference will mark her 10th year as a MUN-er, her 2nd year on the Secretariat, and her 6th country to do MUN with. When she’s not making dramatic piano covers to cope with her latest math proof, you’ll find her smiling on a dance stage, acting, picnicking, beach-tripping with her friends, or stargazing at Morehead Planetarium. She adores spontaneity, new ideas, and- above all- meeting new people! Amanda can’t wait to learn all about chaos, creativity, and curiosity from this year’s delegates
