ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE

After the ever-growing demands of mankind finally pushed Earth past its maximum limits, humanity seemed poised to backslide to its pre-industrial origins.  As Earth's environment collapsed, the nation-states that led to the disaster went with it.  What replaced them was the corporate order, enormous corporations clinging to the shells of former nations and peoples.  Then, the accidental discovery of the flex cell energy production process and its associated wonder fuel, Phos-5, marked some reprieve for Earth.  Energy demands could be met cleanly and sustainably for the first time, but Earth's capacity of Phos-5 was limited.

This was when the relatively obscure corporation Omnicorp identified centuries' worth of Phos-5 scattered around Mars on long-range scans.  Immediately, Omnicorp began establishing extraction colonies on the Red Planet and crowding out other corporations from accessing the supply.  Now generations have passed, and while Earth is stable and prosperous, the people of Mars have grown weary under their constant burden of extraction and shipment.  Growing tensions finally boiled over in a spontaneous prison riot on Mars, kicking off the whirlwind of political and military action we now call the Martian Revolution.

In this JCC committee, delegates will represent the interests of Earth or the Martian-Spaceshipper alliance standing against the home world.  Grounded in political, technological, and social realities, this committee will combine the exciting elements of sci-fi with the thrill of intrigue much more similar to a historical crisis than a fantasy committee.  This committee is based on The Martian Revolution podcast, Season 11 of Revolutions, by Mike Duncan.

Amanda Carvalho is a junior from Nairobi, Kenya, double-majoring in Mathematics and Business Administration. This conference will mark her 10th year as a MUN-er, her 2nd year on the Secretariat, and her 6th country to do MUN with. When she’s not making dramatic piano covers to cope with her latest math proof, you’ll find her smiling on a dance stage, acting, picnicking, beach-tripping with her friends, or stargazing at Morehead Planetarium. She adores spontaneity, new ideas, and- above all- meeting new people! Amanda can’t wait to learn all about chaos, creativity, and curiosity from this year’s delegates
