ABOUT THIS COMMITTEE
The National Hockey League's Players Association (NHLPA) serves as the collective bargaining unit for the players of this professional league. Each delegate will serve as a member of the NHLPA's executive board, which votes on all matters pertaining to player rights, salaries, and punishments. Recently, the NHLPA announced a mandatory salary cap increase for teams across the league to keep up with inflation and reflect the overall growth of the league. The committee will follow what this will look like for smaller franchises, which do not have the same capacity to spend as some larger teams.
Delegates will also have to grapple with new player demands under salary instability. We may have a small team that is unable to pay their players, resulting in player strikes or potentially a league lockout mid-season. The committee's timeline will be from September of the 2025-2026 season up to the NHL trade deadline. This builds tension and forces members of the NHLPA to negotiate the best positions for their team before their rosters are finalized for the playoffs.
